Immunodeficiency including innate immunity abnormalities lies at the heart of the chronic diseases of the upper airways. The purpose of this study was to determine the features of phagocytes functions in children with adenoiditis and otitis media with effusion. The fraction of neutrophils was significantly reduced in smears of all patients. Increasing of the fraction of macrophages, lowering of interleukin 8 and interleukin18 concentration, high percentage of interferon-gamma-positive samples was determined at patients with adenoiditis and otitis media with effusion. Expression of the intrafollicular CD68+ cells was significantly higher in adenoids from children with adenoiditis and otitis media. These results illustrate the enhanced activation of macrophages when inflammation extended from nasopharynx to middle ear in patients with adenoiditis. This serves as an additional justification for the appointment of the immune therapy aiming correction of the macrophages functions to increase the efficacy of adenoiditis treatment and prevention of the aftereffects of illness. |
