The aim of the study was to assess the balance of pro- and antioxidant systems in patients with new coronavirus infection.
Materials and methods. Fifty-six patients of the Hospital of Particularly Dangerous Infections No. 1 in Nalchik with community-acquired bilateral polysegmental pneumonia caused by coronovirus and respiratory failure (DN) of stage 1-3 diagnosed in 2021 were examined.
We observed that an increase in the blood content of MDA in the acute period of COVID-19 (2.7±0.11 mmol/l, p<0.001 in patients with moderate course of the disease and 3.5±0.15 mmol/L, p<0.001, p2<0.001 in patients with severe course, ceruloplasmin deficiency (310±5.7 mg/l, p<0.001 in moderate and 287±5.1 mg/l, p<0.001, p2<0.001 in severe), increased catalase content in erythrocytes (56.1±1.6 mmol/min.l, p<0.001 in moderate and 64.7±1.5 mmol/min.l, p<0.001, p2<0.001 for severe).
The imbalance of the pro-oxidant system and antioxidant protection indicates the disruption of these systems, leading to the accumulation of toxic forms of free radicals and reactive metabolites in new coronavirus infection, which depends on the stage and severity of the disease. No restoration of normal indicators as a result of the treatment was observed in hospitalized patients, which rendered further treatment and rehabilitation of these patients necessary.
